Plain Tiger Spotlight: African Jacquard

French / African fusion

By Greer Krige

African Jacquard epitomises a successful cultural fusion. Their renowned homeware textiles are woven from French linen and African cotton using the traditional French Jacquard technique. In this way, they combine true French quality and distinct African design to create something unique and truly amazing.

They take inspiration from the multitude of cultures, colours and landscapes throughout the African continent and iconic indigenous symbols such as wildlife spoor prints and the bright geometric Ndebele art.

What exactly is the Jacquard weaving technique? It is a traditional French weaving technique that combines a variety of weaving styles into one fabric, offering versatility and intricacy in the design. The effect is a damask effect with the reverse being just as attractive as the front.

I asked whether the folk at African Jacquard had a favourite product or design and if so, why? It is their Bogolan design, which can be found in their 100% linen throws and cushions. It’s an unapologetic fusion between traditional and modern, and both they and their customers love the “Afro-chicness’ this design brings to any space. It is woven with their signature waffle weave which completely transforms the design, giving it depth and texture.

Other collections in the African Jacquard portfolio include the bright and bold Kuba Collection, woven with 100% African Cotton. Inspired by the Kuba designs found in the Congolese Raffia fabric which is a handwoven cloth traditionally made from Raffia palm trees.

I am coveting their latest Metallic collection, which is inspired by the rich colours of precious metals and African wildlife like the Metallic Leopard Cushion Cover which is bold, rich and the finishing touch to an eclectic décor scheme.

I asked Christine, the owner and founder of African Jacquard, what her strongest influences had been? For weaving, Moutet, a mill in South-West France; and for design and colour, the various African cultures and designs she has been exposed to whilst living and travelling in Africa.

And what she was most proud of accomplishing? “The development of African Jacquard as an internationally recognized brand, known for our quality and products that are rich in design and texture.”

So what makes their brand and products so special? All their products are woven in the heart of Cape Town, South Africa, and are inspired by the designs and cultures found in various African countries. Their products are woven with high-quality yarns and are considered, with the intent to last.

Their collections consist of luxurious bed throws and bedspreads to table linen and towels. African Jacquard endeavours to bring delight to the world through the quality of their products and authenticity in their design.
