2022’s Essential Bag Trends

These are this year’s must-have bags

By Danielle Viljoen

Bags are an ever-evolving wardrobe staple that have the ability to elevate any outfit. While many silhouettes including bucket and clutch bags may seem repetitive and tired; fresh, modern adaptations will continue to pique the interest of the fashion world.

Another recognized trend this year is sustainability which is a groundbreaking step in the conscious movement. This trend is largely attributed to high-end designers’ usage of leather alternatives. Recently, Stella Mccartney sent a mushroom leather bag down the runway. Other designers have begun to use the likes of cactus and grape leather as well as recycled plastic bottles.

Take your pick of 20, sustainably made, bags you’ll love forever.

Colour Splash

Bags in Bold hues are sure to make a statement and add dimension to any wardrobe. These bright hues give new meaning to arm-candy in rainbow brights and creamy leather textures.

The Bucket Bag

Bucket bags are truly the shapeshifters of the bag family. While the bucket bag tends to be a recurring theme, it takes on many forms as fashion evolves. Transform your shoulder bag into a sling with a statement strap or accessorise with bangle detailing in the form of a handle.

The Clutch

Clutch bags are hardly newbies to the accessory department. Over the years we have seen the loyal clutch replaced with mini bags and those alike. Unrestricted to their initial designation, ‘evening bag’, these petite pouches are the wardrobe staple you need, day or night.

Party Bag

Bags in high shine and metallic embellishments are no longer restricted to the dance floor. High-shine items in unlikely fabrications will elevate even the simplest of daytime looks.

Full Circle

Circular bags make for the perfect day-to-night companion. Small in size- these disk-shaped bags are ideal for carrying the essentials.

Heavy Metal

Bold hardware and chain detail will notably be the most popular embellishment or fabrication this season. If you’re one to steer clear of jewellery; eye-catching metal details add extra flair to your overall look.

The Shoulder Bag

The shoulder bag is a recurring trend that has resurfaced over recent, consecutive, years thanks to the 90’s trend. While bold hardware screams 90’s, a colour block version gives this bag an updated look.

Too Tanned

If versatility could be represented by anything other colour or hue than black, then tan would be ‘it’ for me. For the woman who carries the world in her bag - look at a bucket tote complete with an additional strap to be converted into a crossbody. Alternatively, lose the baggage and opt for a crossbody phone bag made from up-cycled leather offcuts.
